These pieces are mute artifacts

of sonic atmospheres.

A dialogue between

the photographic and the painterly,

they are meditations on quietude,

silent contemplations on being,

light, space

and sound.

Tiny portals

into the nothingness

that exists within the world.

‘‘ I like to take still photographs while film making, so that during the process of creating an installation work there’s room to realize static visual pieces that reflect the site specific spatiality of the recorded sounds. These works can take the form of large canvases, printed with pigment dye on flax linen, which are then ‘over-painted’ and hand finished with various mixed media using acrylics, metallic powders, local island clay and evoporated sea water ; a mirror layer of the materiality to the sonic experience of the space recorded.”

Visually I work with the analogue as a process, with images of the physical world. For me these representations form a type of scrying mirror, acting as devices of enchantment, to pierce the perceptual veil of the phenomenal - that which the senses and the digital view as a fixed reality. In essence they are invitations to gaze, to be still, to move beyond”.

‘‘ The crafted element for me is intrinsic to the conceptual nature of these works, mirroring an aspect that engages with liminal states of perception. I view this stage of the process as an essential meditative component, creating a more subtle reading of each piece beyond simply a manipulation of materials upon it’s surface.”

Being, Nothingness and the close connection to Nature

“Based on an isolated headland, on a jungle island in Thailand’s Gulf of Siam has been a calling to journey into the frequencies of Nature’s sounds. These works are informed by this sense of place, while living with the ocean for an extensive period of time. The shoreline and the forest inhabit a space where the invisible influence of sound is intimately woven throughout the fabric of my experience here with the site specific spatiality of sound and the transformative spaces they generate. Visually these works are both a record of sonic influences upon states of being and a reference to memory while being in raw Nature. The whispers of this ‘breathing edge of the land’ create a living dialogue that can be mapped and explored, opening up a wider perception. Witnessed, unimpeded by the static noise of modernity, a more meditative state of flow becomes apparent through a deeper listening to the vast array of sounds present, inducing a ritual type of ‘return and repair’ with self. Nurture remembering Nature.”

- Andrei Jewell, Gulf of Siam
