the photographic and the painterly.

Mirrors to sonic atmospheres,

they are meditations on quietude,

silent contemplations on being,

‘‘ I make still photographs while film making, so that during the process of creating an installation work there’s room to realize visual pieces that reflect the site specific spatiality of the recorded sounds. These works can take the form of large canvases, printed with pigment dye on flax linen, which are then over-painted and hand finished with various mixed media using acrylics, metallic powders, local island clay and evaporated sea water, bringing an additional layer of materiality to the sonic experience of the space.”

“The horizon line has never read to me as a boundary, rather more as a membrane. Where sky and water meet, something passes through: light but also sound. These works come from sitting with that line until it stopped being a place where two things end and started being a place where one thing breathes. The mixed media is not decoration, it's the residue of that threshold, evaporated seawater and pulverized coral folded into the linen the way memory folds into matter. What you're seeing is the reflected underbelly of the ocean, recorded, not simply photographed so much as transcribed, the way a tide is never one moment but a continuous rhythm, traceable only by following it through time.”

I work with the analogue as a process, with images of the physical world as a type of scrying mirror to in-between states, devices of enchantment, to move one beyond the perceptual veil of the phenomenal - that which the senses and the digital affix as reality. In essence they are invitations to gaze, to be still, to see emptiness as form”.

I AM OCEAN ,

8mm Film Installation, Eminent Domain Show 2017, fmr. Robert Miller Gallery, NEW YORK

“The human body unadorned, suspended, floating presents the figure as both vessel and accumulation, forms caught in states of rest, dream, recovery, and dissolution. The figures in these works carry within them the residue of time, space, and lived experience, existing always in a condition of tender suspension: neither fully here nor gone, but enduringly in-between. It is here that the notion of return and repair becomes central - a pull toward the ocean as primal chamber, a womb interior where the body, saturated with the codes and conditionings inscribed upon it, is gently undone. The sea becomes a site of re-membering, where memory held deep within the body, its tensions, its histories, its wounds, is met by something older and more patient than language, even the breath itself. Submerged in this fluid, boundless space, the markings of time are not erased but quietly rewritten, the body released from its accumulated weight and returned, however briefly, to a state of original possibility.”

‘‘ The crafted element is intrinsic to the conceptual nature of these works, mirroring an aspect that engages with layers to states of perception. I view this stage of the process as an essential meditative component, creating a more subtle reading of each piece beyond simply a manipulation of materials upon it’s surface. Image and object merge as threshold container toward the matter of enchantment.”

Being, Nothingness and the close connection to Nature

“Based on an isolated headland of a jungle island in Thailand’s Gulf of Siam, these works emerge from a deep calling into the frequencies of Nature’s sounds. Shaped by an extended dwelling with the ocean, they are rooted in this sense of place. The shoreline and forest carry an invisible sonic influence — intimately woven through the fabric of experience here — where site-specific spatiality of sound generates spaces of transformation. Visually, these works serve as both a record of sound’s influence upon states of being, and a reference to memory while inhabiting raw nature. The whispers of this breathing edge of the land trace a living dialogue — one that can be mapped and explored, opening wider perception. Witnessed here, unimpeded by the static noise of modernity, a more meditative flow becomes apparent through deeper listening to the vast array of sounds present — initiating a ritual of return and repair with Self. Nurture remembering Nature.”

The Ocean

I am called by

it's light and pattern,

the way it induces

a slowed down

internalized state,

an emptying out towards

a return and repair,

a softening of perception,

an opening

to the somatic,

to the intimacy

of empty spaces

between moments,

by which Nature bids us

to slow and attend,

to listen,

to breath,

to gaze inwardly,

to see the world, anew.
